| Description: | Combining the Sanskrit word 'aman' or peace with 'kora' or circular pilgrimage in Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, Amankora is a series of guest lodges located throughout Bhutan's principal western and central valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Phobjikha. Together they provide an ideal circuit for discovery of cultural traditions unchanged over centuries. Guests may either visit one of the lodges or, to best experience all that Bhutan has to offer, we can plan a tailor-made journey, including one or more of the Amankora lodges located in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey or Bumthang. |
Location
Adjacent to the first and second King of Bhutan’s palace, Wangdicholing, Amankora Bumthang lies within the town of Jakar in the Choekhor Valley in an area commonly known as Bumthang. The Choekhor Valley is covered with fields of buckwheat, millet and potato, with apple orchards climbing up the slopes to mix with deep forest of pine. Access to the Amankora Bumthang lodge passes alongside the former royal sports ground of Bhutan’s first two kings, a traditional and much-used archery, and circles an imposing peach tree planted by the late Queen Mother. The lodge is surrounded by an apple orchard with pear trees along its boundary with the Palace.

Activities & Excursions
Local InterestAcross the Choekhor Valley lie many of the Kingdom’s most auspicious and highly revered houses of worship and ancient monasteries, many decorated with still vibrant ancient wall paintings and richly adorned altars, all with colourful, mystical histories. The valley is known for its cottage industries which produce the highly sought after Bumthang butter, Gouda and Emmenthal cheese, honey and a variety of intriguing fruit spirits and brandies. Visits to organic farms and local cottage industries can be arranged.
Amankora Bumthang’s neighbouring Wangdicholing Palace was built in 1857 as the Kingdom’s first palace and is now the residence of a small monk body that also shares residence in an adjacent Goemba all overlooking five square chortens (Buddhist reliquary monuments) housing water-driven prayer wheels.
